May 9th, 2009Sophisticated Rider

Issues 5-7 are available for download at JaredSouney.com
From 2005-2007 I helped publish seven issues of a magazine called Sophisticated Rider with Pro BMX rider John Parker and Pro Skateboarder/Writer/Commentator Paul Zitzer. The magazine focused on Skate, BMX and FMX (the winter issues had a bit of snow as well)… an Extreme round-up as Zitzer would call it. All seven issues were distributed for free at skateparks around the US (and beyond).

March 8th, 2009John Parker and the Draino
Jared Souney just posted up a little Draino tribute. It’s a wild vert trick that took John Parker 13 years to pull. Full sequence and a mini write up over at his site.

February 20th, 2009Jared Souney’s iPhone-tography

Mt. Hood shot with the “Camera Bag” app
Since I’ve got my iPhone with me at all times, and since we are becoming a “If you don’t upload it to the internet right away it didn’t really happen” society, I’ve been experimenting more with photos from the little bugger. While it’s sort of quirky, slow, and awkward to hold as a camera, it’s always in my pocket so I might as well get the most of out of it.

This isn’t BMX related but the iPhone / photography crowd’s going to dig this!

December 27th, 2008Dave Fucking Young

Jared Souney digging one out of the archives
That’s right. Dave Fucking Young. I don’t know how else to describe him. I met Dave in 1999 when I moved to California. Around that time he was filming for Dave Parrick’s video “Nowhere Fast,” where he produced a part which could be considered one of the best BMX street video parts of all time. It was ahead of its time.

December 16th, 2008Jared Souney tests out the Nikon D90

http://www.jaredsouney.com/
We posted a Shola Edit a while ago that used the Nikon D90 as a video camera and recently, Jared Souney took one out for a spin too. His report is a bit more thorough, testing both its photographic features and HD video capabilities. There’s no BMX in this article but if you’re into photography, it’s worth the read.

December 12th, 2008John Parker: Nothing

A photo and a little history regarding ‘nothings’ on vert
Another one from the archives, though not really that deep (it’s from 2006). It’s John Parker, shot for Ride Magazine. Nothings (the trick in the photo) aren’t really anything new. Ron Wilkerson did them on quarterpipes in the late 80s, and he paid the price in the form of a severe head injury, coma, and a week in the hospital.

November 16th, 2008DK “Golf” Flight Bag

Avoid airline fees AND hook up with country club MILFs.
Last winter, a good part of the floundering airline industry came together (well, not really but it almost feels like it) and decided to increase the prices on the cost of traveling with a bicycle on a plane by between 30 and 50%. Ridiculous, I know. It used to be, if you were traveling with a bike, you’d buy a duffle bag from the Army/Navy store for $20, break down your bike as much as possible, tell the airlines that it was promotional equipment (which is kinda true, to a point) and enjoy the comfort of avoiding extra charges on traveling with a bike.

Catfish wrote a blog a while ago about boycotting United Airlines due to an unjust fee increase for traveling with bikes [read here]. United isn’t the only airline that’s jacking up the fees though. To help get around it, DK made the flight bag you see above above. Pretty sneaky.
On a slightly related note, we’re still curious to learn more about Jared Souney’s gun idea…
