What’s new in your life? Lots of new stuff going on at DK. Tons of new products. Getting ready for the DK Dirt Circuit in August. I also just built up a new flatland bike that I am super stoked on. Full on new school flatland style and it’s radical. I was inspired after hanging out with Alex Jumelin and Matthias Dandois in Monaco last month. Name drops!

Will Stroud’s setup

What is your current camera, lenses, and other gear you are working with these days? I shoot almost everything in HD these days with my Panasonic HVX-200. For lenses I’m using the Century Optics .3x HD fisheye with a rail support system since the lens is really heavy. I’m using Sennheiser wireless mics. For computer setups I have my Apple Quad-Core Desktop with 2 TB of storage and a 30” HD Apple Cinema Display that stays in my office. For traveling I have an older Apple Powerbook G4 that’s about to die on me as I type this. I also have 2 older 16mm film cameras that I don’t get to use so much anymore because of the cost of film and processing. I have a couple new short 16mm edits I shot for Red Bull that will be online soon.

This work week can kiss my ass goodbye. Here we've got adult entertainer Skye Lopez standing at some long gone trails in the 909, they had a name but it presently escapes me. The Action Sports Sex #11 shoot was the weirdest day at work ever, but this "work" day is up there somewhere. I didn't really have any spare time to do scans this week, but I did finish and submit my first article for the Boxed Wine Fiasco column in Dig which went to print this Tuesday. It involves corndogs. More Skye next week.

Chase Hawk in 2001

Low Profile from DigBMX.com
Low Profile from DigBMX.com

For days I’ve been struggling to write something about Chase Hawk and fighting my own natural tendencies to be a dramatic cheeseball. I keep starting over and trying to find some artsy way to tell his tale, but I don’t think that fits Chase, so I’ll attempt to stick to the facts. Chase is 14 years old, lives in Austin, Texas and is an unusually good bike rider.

Clip of the Week

Dig BMX made a commentary about these being the next big trend in BMX. I think they’re right and can see it happening for a while. Then once everybody’s doing it and we have a hundred 10 second clips each day, the internet will explode.

It may seem strange to some but back as recently as 2004 ‘the Metal Bikes look’ (as it came to be known) wasn’t as commonplace in BMX as it is today. In fact, when we ran this piece in DIG issue 38 on a Portland up and comer by the name of Caleb Ruecker, we were actually accused of making the whole thing up. It was all too much for some to handle for whatever reason. Caleb was (and is still) very much a real rider though and recently Joey Spinoza caught up with him to find out what he’s up to these days… Go here to read that.

Dig has been scanning older articles lately, which is great since a lot of people in other countries probably have limited access to their mag. Hopefully they keep doing it more and more ’cause there are some really great articles in their print archive.
