The Big Big BMX Show: Getting bigger and better

Glenn PP Milligan debuted The Big Big BMX Show last month and since then has produced two more episodes, each one getting bigger, better and more refined than the last. If you haven’t seen it yet, the show has a mixture of talk-show like elements, combined with web edits, interviews and random surprises. The platform’s fairly loose so you never quite know what to expect (take the intro for Episode 3 for example). The show is the first of its kind in BMX and a breath of fresh air from your typical street-riding production. It’s always great seeing somebody breaking the mold and exploring new avenues of entertainment.

What switched on The Big Big BMX Show light bulb?

Uh, it was kinda a growing Idea for a few months. With the Nike Video finally wrapping up and a few other projects being finished and no immediate plans to travel for a couple months, it seemed like the timing was right.

Your show is a lot different from the usual BMX videos floating around the internet, what do you like most about working on this type of project as oppose to the typical bmx videos?

I’ve been making videos for a long time, I’ve always tried to do different things with different projects. This project is very different in so many ways, from a production standpoint, it’s kind of a nightmare, but super fun and challenging to do.

It’s always a brave step putting something new and different to the BMX table, what type of stuff was running through your head right before you introduced the first episode?

Oh my god, I’ve spoken on a few videos before and I saw comments like “his voice gave me aids”, I actually laughed out loud when I read that, but needless to say I was pretty nervous when the first one dropped, I expected to get my ass handed to me, but people were very supportive and overall positive. You are always going to get some bad, and not everyone is going to like you, I try to focus on that. Hopefully my voice doesn’t spread any more aids.

From a technical standpoint, what kind of work did you have to put in to get the green-screen effect going?

It’s in my living room. The day I decided to do this it took 13 hours to get it right. I have the screen permanently hanging on one side of my apt, It rolls up when I’m not shooting. Other then that there’s are 7 individual lights ranging from 250watts to 1000 to keep the screen working right. After it’s all shot I just use a Green Screen filter in Final Cut Pro. It works awesome, but takes a while to render.

What’s your camera and editing software of choice these days?

Final Cut Pro for editing. Right now I shoot with a Canon XH-A1 HDV cam with a firestore 100 gig drive. I’m thinking about a Panasonic P2 cam or maybe a Sony, not sure yet, it’s a considerable investment.

A lot of kids don’t realize this but you’ve done a LOT of videos and have been around BMX for a while, what’s 5 of your favorite videos you’ve created?

1. New York Hardcore (ME)…First video I ever made, sense of accomplishment.
2. Neighborhood Superheroes (BASE BROOKLYN)…Base Brooklyn (the company it was made for) was near and dear to my heart.
3. Writing on the Wall (NIKE6.0)…I got to travel all over the world with some of the coolest people on earth.
4. Turbulence (TRANSWORLD)…Edwin
5. On The Clock (VOLUME)…First video that came out close to how I wanted it to look in a while, I was really happy with some of the intros.

What’s 5 of your favorite videos you’ve watched (it doesn’t have to be BMX)?

1. Dorkin in York 4.5
2. Animal, Can I Eat
3. Dirt Bros 1991
4. The Reason (skateboarding)
5. Dorkin in York 3

What’s 5 things you like to tell people that PP stands for?

I actually always tell people it’s Patrick Peter, it’s never been a secret, but people tell me all kinds of things: Piss Pocket, Pee Pee, Peter Paul, Partly Perturbed… etc.

Anything else you’d like to add or let people know?

I’m really happy that people are into the show, I plan to add more segments, included more people and hopefully get bigger and better as time goes on. I welcome any and all suggestions: GPPM@vitalbmx.com

What will you be doing in approximately 69 minutes?!

Taking a nap, episode three just finished and it took a while to edit!
